Lesson FAQs
When should I start my child in formal swim lessons?
We recommend introducing your child to the water in a Baby & Me class as early as 6 months old — especially important for any child who is around a pool or body of water. Formal swim lessons can begin as soon as your child walks confidently. Swim lessons before age four significantly reduce the risk of drowning (AMA Archives of Pediatric Medicine, 2009).
How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?
It's impossible to say exactly — every child learns at their own pace. Age, physical development, playtime in the pool, how often they take lessons, and your family's approach to swimming all play a part. Many two-year-olds are swimming around the pool and breathing independently after 2–3 months of twice-a-week lessons.
How often should my child swim?
Once a week builds steady progress. Add a second day for even faster results — and you'll get 20% off your second day when you enroll twice a week.
What is the minimum number of lessons I should commit to?
For learn-to-swim students, plan on about two months of lessons — roughly eight lessons for once-a-week swimmers. Committing to the full progression gives the Daland method time to work.
What is a Kickstart lesson, and why sign up for one?
Kickstart is the fastest way to get your swimmer going. Most Kickstart sessions are 8 lessons — Monday through Thursday for two consecutive weeks. Sometimes we offer a one-week, 5-lesson session (Monday–Friday). It's perfect for families prepping for a summer vacation or who just want to be pool-ready fast.
What should my child wear to lessons?
Children under three (and older if not fully potty-trained) must wear a disposable swim diaper and a plastic-lined swimsuit/diaper — the plastic-lined diaper is included with your registration fee. Anyone with hair long enough to drip in their face or impede breathing should wear a swim cap. And don't forget a big, fluffy towel (or two)!
Does my child need goggles?
We discourage goggles while your child is learning, so they don't become dependent on them — when children accidentally fall into a pool, they're almost never wearing goggles. Once your child can swim confidently, goggles are just fine.
What is the water temperature?
Our lap pool is kept between 86–88°F and our teaching pool at 90°F. Keeping the water warm means your child doesn't have to “get used to” it — they can start learning right away.
What if my child is scared or cries during the lesson?
Our teachers are trained to work with even the most nervous swimmers. Stay calm, reassure your child, and let the instructor take it from there. Separation anxiety is common in children 1½–3, and fear of the water is common in older kids — both ease with time. Please don't pull your child from the pool mid-lesson or stop lessons altogether; that tends to reinforce the fear before lessons have a chance to work. Over the years we've developed many strategies to move through and overcome those fears. Your child's safety is always our top priority — please be patient and let our team do what we do best.
What if my child is sick — should I bring them?
It depends on how they're feeling. But if your child has flu-like symptoms, a fever, or any stomach or digestive troubles, please keep them home and reschedule.
If I miss a lesson, can I get a make-up?
Yes. To earn a make-up, cancel your scheduled lesson in advance (make-ups can be scheduled up to three days ahead). Make-ups aren't issued as credit, but you can use them anytime you're enrolled. No make-ups for “no-show” lessons or for swim team.
Can I change my day or time?
Just give us a call — we'll do our best to find a day or time that fits your family better.
How do I sign up, and when can I start?
You can enroll online anytime and start right away, pending availability — just add a card in our secure Parent Portal (tuition is due at enrollment). Our office is open seven days a week, so you're also welcome to stop by and find a lesson time that works for you.
How much is registration?
Registration is $45 per year, with a $10 sibling discount for additional children in the same family.
Do you enroll year-round?
Yes — we enroll year-round so skills never slip, in heated pools across all three locations.
When will my child be “drown-proofed” or “water safe”?
At Daland, we believe there's no such thing as “drown-proofed” or “water safe.” We teach swimming skills along with a deep love and respect for the water — but no one is ever completely safe in the water. Close, attentive supervision by an adult who can swim (and ideally knows CPR) is always essential. Follow the Safer 3: 1) Safer kids — give them swim lessons; 2) Safer water — fence your pool and lock your gate; 3) Safer response — know what to do in an emergency and learn CPR. Leslie Daland serves on the board of Stop Drowning Now, a nonprofit dedicated to water-safety education.
What can I do to help my child feel comfortable in the water?
The bathtub is a wonderful place for water play — pour water over your child's head and face, and practice simple skills. Take your child to the pool as often as you can, too. The more fun exposure they get to the water, the faster any fear fades.
Do you teach children with special needs?
Yes! Our instructors have additional training for teaching children with special needs, who often show incredible joy in the water — and swimming can be wonderful for their development. Please share your child's individual needs with our office and instructor; the more we know, the more effective each lesson will be.
Do you teach adults?
Absolutely. We believe every adult should be able to swim comfortably across the pool — it's especially important for parents keeping their kids safe. We have a dedicated curriculum for adult non-swimmers that gently addresses fears and builds a new, confident relationship with the water.

Water safety
first and always
Every Daland lesson is built on water safety — the skills that save lives. It is, and always has been, our number one priority.
From a baby's first comfortable breath to a confident swimmer's reliable back float, every skill we teach is sequenced to make your child safer in and around the water. Our instructors are trained to spot and gently correct risky habits early — and we're a proud partner of Stop Drowning Now, keeping water-safety education at the heart of everything we do.
